Grammar help! [09 Nov 2009|02:49am] japanese [silverstardom] Hello, I was doing some exercise practice for the JLPT 3 exam, and I came across several sentence structures that I have never seen before (this is making me panic, bleh): １．さんまは秋が旬の魚で、１０月から　１１月に　かけてが　一番おいしい　ころでしょう。 → I don't quite understand the sentence structure: why is the て-form followed by a particle - in this case, が？ How do you use this sentence structure, and what is it used to express/used for? ２Ａ．また、あなたが家にいない時間に録画をしたいときは　録画の　予約ができ、たいへん便利です。 ２Ｂ．それから、コピーの　機械の　ふたをあけ　コピーしたい　げんこうをおきます。 → I've kind of figured out by guessing that this sentence structure (i.e. using the stem of a verb's ますform) functions somewhat like the て-form of a verb, in the sense that it's used to join sentences. One question that I have though, is this: when is it appropriate to use the stem of a verb's ますform and when to use a verb's て-form to join sentences? medical doctor? [06 Nov 2009|10:44am] japanese [sapah_fu] I am currently making meishi for my mom's employees to present to some japanese people who are visiting her company later this month. since some of the people I am making business cards for are doctors, I obviously want to denote that on their cards. however, I don't know how D: the word for "M.D."/"doctor of medicine" is 医学博士 (いがくはかせ / いがくはくし) I don't know whether to put it before, after, or under the person's name on the card. does anyone know? or has anyone seen a meishi from a japanese doctor who could help me out? any help would be greatly appreciated... my japanese professor is taking forever to email me back D: thanks! cross-posted (once!) sorry! 6 コメント - コメントする.

Exploring the Female Consciousness in Boys' Love Manga [03 Nov 2009|10:58pm] japanese [seiret] A few months ago, around the start of the first semester, I blogged about writing this academic paper on boys' love. A lot of people extended their help, and because of that I managed to get a 1.0 (the highest grade my university gives) on both the paper and as my final grade. This is my very first paper as a student pursuing a master's degree, so I'm really very happy that my hard work earned a good grade. I'm now more confident in applying for a scholarship. :) As to why I chose this topic, there was a time in my life when I consumed boys' love media as if it were oxygen. ^^;; I am somewhat glad that's over. Before I wrote the paper, it had been a long time since I read BL manga, and it only came to mind because of well, Eiki Eiki, who piqued my interest for being an ojousan and a BL mangaka at the same time. It was rather strange for me to see the grandchild of a former prime minister to choose that which is queer as her subject of expertise. It made me think of how Japanese society views this phenomenon. At the same time, I had lingering unresolved issues about BL, particularly about its difference from gay literature. My main objective in writing this, therefore, is neither to promote nor problematize, but simply to create in its readers self-aware consumers of popular culture. As a way of showing my gratitude, I uploaded my paper entitled Exploring the Female Consciousness in Boys' Love Manga: The Real, The Ideal, and the Despised Self to the websites linked below. Feel free to send me your comments and criticisms -- they will help me become a better writer. salvation in kanji? [31 Oct 2009|09:16pm] japanese [harcsa] hey guys without a lot of tinsel, i have finally decided to get myself a tattoo. and since the word that i would like to have tattooed on myself (which has a huge meaning to me personally, even if it might be judged laughable by others) doesn't seem (to me) nice enough in any of the languages i speak (hungarian, english, french, danish or latin), i decided to go for a symbol of it. and so i thought that kanji would probably be my cup of tea. nevertheless i don't wanna just google the word and take whatever that comes up as a result. not that i don't trust the internet (i don't though), but i also need some personal advice - and since i don't personally know any japanese or japanese people myself (sadly) , i figured you guys would be my second best choice :-)  so, the word i'd like to have is.. salvation (or redemption). my problem with them both, is that they unavoidably have this christian (or the least very religious) undertone.. but eventually i guess the point lies in what the words mean to me, not what they mean to everyone else. and so i did a little research, and found this and this. first one is supposed to be "redemption", while the second is supposed to be both "salvation" and "redemption". not that i want to start a philosophical discussion or a definition-course, but would you be so kind to explain the difference in the meanings of the two signs? is it something like.. that the salvation-redemption one is more "religious" while the redemption could refer to saving (self-saving) even from sin without such a strong religious undertone, or what? ...and i have been told that if i want a kanji tattoo, i should find an artist who knows how to write kanji. i am trying, but the chances seem to be remote, thus i thought that maybe one of you would be kind enough to write the symbol on a paper (as big as possible) and then scan it, so i could print it and take it to the salon and get it done?  okay, i think that is all, thank you so much for reading and helping and all. a. 17 コメント - コメントする.

Some help with みて and ずに [29 Oct 2009|01:22pm] japanese [laina_raylight] I was reading and comparing the Japanese to a translation of an article when I found something I didn't understand. In the the article: 増田は「走ってみて、先が見えずに不安になりました」 English Translation: Masuda commented, "Running without being able to see the goal made me nervous". So my question is what does the みて after 走って mean? (I assume it is similar to when you use a ‘tte’ form with いる like 走っている/running to make it an adverb?) How is 見えずに different from 見えない Thank you in advance! 4 コメント - コメントする.
